The United Kingdom Boots the Tories from Power
The results of the UK election are in and it's a Labour Party landslide

The United Kingdom Boots the Tories from Power
After 14 years, the United Kingdom has declared independence from its Republican Party, the Tories. Exit polls show the Labour Party comfortably cleared the 326 seats needed for a majority, winning 410 of the 650 seats. This makes the second largest Labour majority since World War II. As party leader, Keir Starmer is on track to become the new prime minister.
The party even made big gains in Scotland where the ruling party, the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP), lost dozens of seats. Exit polls show that the SNP retained only 10 seats, down from 48.
The Liberal Democrat Party also had a big night, bringing their MP seat total from 15 to 61. Plaid Cymru, the Welsh nationalist party, which is center-left, gained 1 seat for a total of 4. The Green Party increased its presence in the House of Commons from 1 member to 2.
When all is said and done, the Conservative Party will have lost 210 seats, leaving them with 131—down from 341. A silver lining is that the Conservatives will have the second biggest share of members of parliament. As an added disaster, the right-wing populist Reform Party (Britain’s MAGA), which is led by Nigel Farage (Britain’s Tommy Tuberville), gained 12 seats for a total of 13.
Since 131 seats is the lowest number of MP seats in the conservative party’s history and it drove the far-right to gain more power in the UK government, this election is sure to be a wake-up call.
The party was clobbered in areas where very short-term Prime Minister Liz Truss’s disastrous fiscal policy resulted in mortgage costs skyrocketing. The party has also been largely defeated by the Labour Party in regions that voted for Brexit in 2016 and where medical costs are leaving them in dire financial straits and medical care is lackluster.
Lord Peter Mandelson, a former Labour Party member under Prime Minister Tony Blair, told the BBC News channel, "an electoral meteor has now struck planet earth."
Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer said, “The tectonic political plates are shifting. In just a few hours we will be able to see how far.”
Results are still coming in as seats in the House of Commons are claimed. But we have a clear picture that UK voters are deeply unhappy with how the conservatives corruptly wielded the power they gave them and are ready for change.

On Tuesday, a 3-judge panel on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi ruled that Mississippi’s legislative maps violated section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and ordered them to be redrawn. The panel ruled that the GOP-led state legislature must create a new Black-majority Senate district that encompasses DeSoto County, which is south of Memphis, and another that encompasses Hattiesburg. The legislature must also create a new Black-majority House district in Chickasaw County and Monroe County, which are located in the Northeast corner of the state. The federal court also gave the legislature until before its 2025 legislative session begins to implement a new map, but the state is already planning to appeal the decision.
In anticipation of the Democratic Party replacing President Biden with VP Kamala Harris as its presidential candidate, the Republican Party has already debuted its ad campaign attacking the Veep. The ad’s narrative is that Biden is unfit for office because of his age and uses a wedge issue—the border—to portray Harris as his “enabler-in-chief.”

On Tuesday, the Biden administration approved its 9th major offshore wind energy project that will be located off the coast of New Jersey. The Department of Interior said the Atlantic Shores South wind project would install 195 win turbines at up to 10 offshore substations that will power 1M homes. With this latest approval, the Biden administration has enabled the production of 13 gigawatts of clean energy to power nearly 5M homes. DOI secretary Deb Haaland said in a statement, “The Biden-Harris administration is building momentum every day for our clean energy future, and today’s milestone is yet another step toward our ambitious goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore energy by 2030.”
Donald Trump has publicly vowed to veto all offshore wind projects “on day one,” which is part of the Project 2025 agenda.
On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded that a food additive used for citrus-flavored sodas and sports drinks is no longer safe and will revoke its authorization beginning August 2. The food regulatory agency determined that the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO), a chemical ingredient containing bromine that is found in fire retardants, may have the potential for adverse effects in humans even in small amounts. Several nations have banned BVO: The UK in 1970, India in 1990, the EU in 2008, and Japan in 2010. Most multinational beverage companies have replaced BVO with an alternative, including PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, but Keurig Dr Pepper still uses it.
On Monday, the FDA announced the agency, in coordination with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and America’s Poison Centers, is investigating a series of illnesses and one death possibly linked to a microdosing candy brand. This follows the June 27, 2024 product recall initiated by Southern California-based Prophet Premium Blends of its Diamond Shruumz-brand Chocolate Bars, Cones, and Gummies, which contain muscimol, a chemical found in some mushrooms that has not been approved by the FDA. As of Monday, 48 illnesses and 27 hospitalizations had been linked to the candies across 24 states. State poison control centers have received 82 reports of exposure to the product.
The Biden administration is providing $176M in funding for Moderna to develop an mRNA bird flu pandemic vaccine. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) aims to accelerate the pharmaceutical company’s research into a vaccine that’s currently in early-stage testing. The funds, which come from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) program, will go toward developing the vaccine. Concerns about a bird flu pandemic are growing as cases in dairy cows increase nationwide.
The Biden administration is taking action to mandate that companies provide safe working conditions in extreme heat. To counter GOP-led state efforts to loosen and eliminate labor protections, the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) proposed a new rule that would require employer training to identify heat hazards and provide frequent rest breaks, access to shade and water, and heat acclimatization for new employees. The federal agency plans to implement 2 heat index thresholds that factor in humidity and temperature to ensure a national safety standard is set. Only 5 states—CA, CO, MN, OR, and WA—have workplace heat safety laws.

26,000 residents were forced to evacuate in Northern California after a wildfire broke out on Tuesday. Gusty winds quickly whipped up the Thompson fire in the city of Oroville, located about 70 miles north of Sacramento. On Wednesday afternoon, another fire, dubbed the Grubbs Fire, ignited 5 miles south of Oroville. Both fires remain zero percent contained. A state of emergency was declared Tuesday evening and Butte County has banned the use of fireworks. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that federal funding has been approved for containing the fires and activated the State Operations Center to coordinate relief efforts. As the Golden State bakes under a heat wave, the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) confirmed that more than a dozen other fires are now blazing, most of them small.
Hurricane Beryl has weakened to a Category 2 storm as it approaches Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula where it’s expected to land as a Category 1 storm. As the area prepares for the hurricane, Jamaica is just beginning its recovery efforts in Beryl’s aftermath. Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness told reporters that 65% of the island has no electricity and that downed power lines have severely limited communications as government officials attempt to assess the damage. Holness also confirmed that there were limited water resources and roadways remain partially blocked.

On Tuesday, 12 U.S. Government officials who resigned in protest of the U.S. policy toward Israel, Gaza, and Palestine released a joint statement to pressure the Biden administration to drastically change its policy in the region. The letter called the U.S.’s policy in Gaza a “failure and a direct threat to U.S. national security” that has not met its objectives; it has not made Israel more safe, it has emboldened extremists, and has put the Palestinian people in direct endangerment. They added, “America’s diplomatic cover for, and continuous flow of arms to, Israel has ensured our undeniable complicity in the killings and forced starvation of a besieged Palestinian population in Gaza. This is not only morally reprehensible and in clear violation of international humanitarian law and U.S. laws, but it has also put a target on America’s back.”
Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) sent a letter to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Tuesday, requesting federal law enforcement to share what process is in place, if any, to protect election workers and officials from violent threats. Ossoff has led the Congressional effort to bolster voting rights and protect the election process, including providing security for election officials and poll workers. In March, he introduced the Election Worker and Polling Place Protection Act and the Right to Vote Act.
In February, he also joined Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) to advocate for funding in the new fiscal budget to enable state and local governments to improve election infrastructure.
